Comedy #2: “A Christmas Story” (1983)

26-Leg-lamp-christmas-storyI could list all the best quotes, but you already know them. I could remark upon the fact that this is the rare comedy that gets funnier the more you watch it, or that it perfectly nails how kids think, or how brothers behave, or perfectly captures how it is to really WANT something. Or, I could point out that Jean Shepherd’s masterpiece knows that true nostalgia is not a celebration of sweetness and light, but when we polish our illusions (and delusions) until they shine like the bright bauble we want them to be.

Instead, I’m just going to leave this here. It is, after all, a major award.

  1. Jape, do you know Shepard’s “Phantom of the Open Hearth”? Find it on YouTube if not.
