Song #43: “Creep” — Scala & Kolacny Brothers (2010)*

il_170x135.300641313While I like the Radiohead original just fine, I’m going to have to go with operatic cover of “Creep” by Scala, the all-women chorus who have made a career out of doing unlikely covers of rock tunes. They take what could be a mere gimmick and manage, especially in the case of “Creep,” to reinvent and transcend the original. While Radiohead’s breakthrough hit was full of the two ingredients guaranteed to attract awkward adolescent adoration — namely longing and self-loathing — the version by Scala & the Kolacny Brothers ratchets up the song’s inherent pathos and buries the listener in an angelic eternal rejection that puts every emo artist ever to shame. I want to cry each time I listen to it.

*Even though it was released in 2002, most of the planet (including me) became aware of the remake when it was brilliantly used as the soundtrack to the trailer for “The Social Network,” the 2010 film about Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook. In fact, at 2 minutes and 30 seconds, it is one of the best trailers ever made and is arguably better than the movie it’s promoting — and it’s all thanks to Scala & Kolacny Brothers’ “Creep.”
